Description
Purranisaurus is an extinct genus of marine crocodyliform from the Middle to Late Jurassic period of Chile and Argentina. The type species P. potens was originally regarded to be a plesiosaur; and later reinterpreted as a possible synonym of Metriorhynchus. Recent phylogenetic analysis has shown that Purranisaurus is a distinct metriorhynchid genus and expanded to include the Middle Jurassic Chilean species Metriorhynchus casamiquelai and M. westermanni.
